Why we resist

I am fascinated these days with how well resistance can hide from us until we see it for what it is. When we think about making any change, big or small, it’s good to understand the types of resistance that can emerge and disrupt our progress.

The following are 4 ways we can recognize and overcome resistance when the idea of change causes it to show up in our lives.

1. Fear of the Unknown:

Resistance to change often stems from our fear of the unknown. We find comfort in familiarity and predictability. Change disrupts our routines and challenges our sense of control, leading to feelings of anxiety and apprehension. Once we know this is what’s happening, we can recognize it for what it is and move past it.

2. Avoiding Loss:

When faced with change, we tend to focus on what we might lose rather than the potential benefits it may bring. Recognizing this bias can help you reframe your mindset and shift your focus towards the possibilities that change can bring.

3. Conflict between the Old and New:

Change can challenge our existing beliefs or behaviors when we introduce the idea of something new. Since it’s uncomfortable to confront inconsistencies, we may resist change to avoid it. By recognizing and challenging this, we can open ourselves up to new perspectives and embrace change more willingly.

4. Impact of Past Experiences:

Our past experiences, both positive and negative, shape our attitudes towards change. If we’ve experienced negative outcomes or failures in the past, we may develop a fear of repeating those experiences. To address this, it’s important to recognize that each new situation is unique and offers an opportunity for growth and learning.

Seeing resistance for what it is, is the first step in overcoming it and moving into the next phase of our lives with greater awareness and strength.
